WAYA is a prestigious accolade honoring female agripreneurs who exhibit exceptional innovation and business acumen within agricultural value chains. Apart from celebrating their achievements, the awards offer grants of up to $300,000. Since 2021, they have been distributed across three categories: Young Female Agripreneur, Female Agriculture Tech Innovator, and Outstanding Value Adding Enterprise, with a Grand Prize Winner selected overall.
In 2024, AGRA introduced regional winners for Young Female Agripreneurs and added two new categories: Women Empowerment Champion and Resilient & Inspirational Leader. Applications close on May 31, 2024, with winners announced during the Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, from September 4th to 6th, 2024. Eligible businesses must operate within agricultural value chains, be legally registered in an African Union country, and have at least 51% female ownership and management.
Ms. Winnie Osulah, AGRA’s Lead for Gender Integration and Acting Director for the Youth, Gender, and Inclusiveness Division, noted a surge in applications, with over 1,500 received from 38 African countries in 2023. AGRA anticipates receiving at least 500 applications per category this year, continuing to honor women’s remarkable contributions to the agri-food sector. Source: The Guardian
