Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has initiated a quelea bird spraying operation at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport in Bauchi to enhance food production in the state. This effort targets the local government areas of Alkaleri, Kirfi, Warji, Jama’are, Misau, Giade, Toro, and Shira.
Representing the governor, Agriculture Commissioner Prof. Simon Madugu Yalams stated that N45 million has been allocated for agrochemicals and equipment to address a recent insect and pest outbreak in various local government areas. This measure aims for timely and effective control due to the urgency of the situation.
The governor highlighted agriculture as the cornerstone of Bauchi’s economy, employing over 75% of the population. He cited scientists’ estimates of about 100 million quelea birds, noting that a flock of two million can destroy 20 tonnes of grains in a single day. Given their migratory nature, he emphasized that the only effective control method is aerial chemical spraying and ground fumigation by the state’s Agriculture Ministry team.
Senator Abubakar Kyari, represented by Zonal Director Daniel Abarshi, assured North-East farmers of sufficient pesticide supply to protect their crops from pests, especially quelea birds. He described these birds as the most destructive pests, capable of causing significant crop losses if uncontrolled. The administration’s focus is on ensuring food availability and security.
Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Yushau Isah thanked the governor for his support and prompt action in the agricultural sector, committing the ministry’s full support to achieving the governor’s agricultural development goals. Source: Daily Trust
