Cross River State cocoa farmers whose farms were devastated by fire in March last year are requesting improved seedlings, chemical supplements, and financial aid to help revive their plantations. Richard Nsan, one of the affected farmers whose farms and nurseries were completely destroyed, emphasized the importance of grants, super-grow chemicals, and a better variety of seedlings to rehabilitate and expand their farms. Describing the incident, Nsan recounted how a retired soldier named Mpama inadvertently started a bushfire while clearing his yam farm, which spread over approximately one kilometer and engulfed Nsan’s farm in Akparabong Community, Ikom LGA. Despite the significant loss incurred, Nsan expressed frustration over Mpama’s lack of apology, noting the years and financial investment he had dedicated to establishing his farm. Source DailyTrust
Our Review:
The plight of cocoa farmers in Cross River State, whose farms were devastated by fire last year, underscores the urgent need for support to revive and expand their operations. Richard Nsan and others affected emphasize the necessity of improved seedlings, chemical boosters, and grants for rehabilitation. The fire, ignited by a neighboring farmer’s actions, wiped out years of investment and effort. Without proper assistance, the farmers face significant setbacks, both financially and emotionally. Addressing their needs for resources and financial aid is crucial not only for individual farmers but also for the broader cocoa value chain, ensuring stability and growth in the region’s agricultural sector.
