The executive council of Cross River State has authorized the Ministry of Agriculture to purchase 103 tractors for smallholder farmers. This approval came during their third meeting of the year, held in the governor’s chambers.
Johnson Ebokpo Jnr., the Commissioner of Agriculture and Irrigation Development, proposed the procurement of these tractors to enhance mechanized agriculture. He disclosed that the supplier has offered the tractors for a total cost of N993,600,000.
Upon delivery, the tractors will be distributed to six youth’ cooperatives, each consisting of 10 members, across all 18 local government areas. This initiative aims to enable them to provide mechanization services for large-scale commercial agriculture.
Additionally, a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Gill Nsa, outlined that the scheme is anticipated to generate 1,080 direct jobs, and 1,200 indirect jobs, and improve the livelihoods of approximately 2,700 rural households. Beneficiaries will have a repayment period of six years for the principal sum, with a three-month moratorium included. Source: Daily Trust
