The National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria (NPPAN) recently emphasized the need for the federal government to establish a National Oil Palm Development Council to regulate and support the oil palm industry effectively. During their National Executive Council election in Abuja, Ambassador Alphonsus Inyang, the re-elected national president, underscored the importance of this council in addressing key challenges faced by the industry.
Ambassador Inyang highlighted several issues plaguing the sector, including inadequate investment opportunities for smallholder farmers, adulteration of palm oil, and the adverse effects of import waivers on local production. He advocated for oil palm trees and plantations to be accepted as collateral for loans, citing their high value and ease of sale compared to other assets in Nigeria.
Furthermore, the association urged the government to halt the issuance of import waivers for palm oil, arguing that such waivers undermine local production and threaten the sustainability of the industry.”
