Experts say Nigeria must ensure smallholder farmers, who produce most of the country’s food, have access to quality seeds to boost agricultural exports. At a webinar hosted by BusinessDay, they emphasized that inadequate access to high-quality seeds and disease-resistant crops hampers Nigeria’s export potential. Elyon Ukiomogbe of Havillah Brooks Farms highlighted the need for research into disease-resistant seeds and better storage methods to reduce post-harvest losses, which are significant. Ahmed Adigun of DS Executive Farm Consult called for increased mechanization and cluster farming to improve food production and export capacity. He noted that while Nigeria struggles to meet domestic food needs, it must still aim to participate in international trade.

Our Review
Experts at the “Talking Trade and Investment Global” webinar emphasized the need for Nigeria to improve access to quality seeds and mechanization to boost agricultural exports. Smallholder farmers, who produce most of the country’s food, struggle with disease-prone crops and lack of modern farming tools, limiting their output and export potential. Addressing these issues through better seed distribution, mechanization, and reducing post-harvest losses is crucial for Nigeria to compete globally. Cluster farming and improved storage facilities were also highlighted as essential for enhancing both food security and export capabilities.
