PULA Advisors AG, in collaboration with Leadway Assurance Company LTD, Heifer International, and AFEX, has initiated the 2023 wet season insurance claims payout under the “Naija Unlock Signature Programme.” This program, facilitated by Heifer International in conjunction with AFEX, covered rice, maize, soya, and ginger smallholder farmers across several states, including Niger, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Kebbi, and Jigawa.
Leadway Assurance, as the principal insurer, disbursed N110 million in claims to AFEX for ginger growers in Kaduna State who suffered total crop losses due to a ginger blight outbreak. A total of 1,138 ginger farmers received compensation for their significant harvest losses, facilitated by Heifer International’s pre-financing of insurance premiums at the beginning of the planting season.
This initiative underscores Leadway Assurance’s commitment to protecting livelihoods and promoting climate resilience among smallholder farmers, thereby contributing to national food security. AFEX’s role in leveraging insurance within its value-chain financing model highlights its efforts to mitigate agricultural risks and support farmers with capital, infrastructure, and market access.
Looking forward, the partnership aims to expand insurance coverage for more Nigerian smallholder farmers in the upcoming 2024 farming season, urging stakeholders in the agricultural value chains to participate and secure their projects against climatic uncertainties and other risks.
