Our Review
The Federal Government of Nigeria’s collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to empower 121,000 smallholder farmers across nine states is a significant stride toward achieving food security and boosting Nigeria’s agricultural value chain. This initiative, focusing on the production, processing, and marketing of key crops like rice and cassava, directly impacts the livelihoods of farmers by providing essential farming inputs and establishing critical infrastructure such as the Rice Innovation Centre and aggregation centers.
By prioritizing the involvement of women and youth, the programme not only addresses food security but also fosters economic inclusion, creating job opportunities and reducing poverty in rural communities. The farmers’ contribution of 30% toward equipment costs also ensures a sense of ownership, leading to sustained engagement even after the programme concludes.
This initiative highlights the importance of strategic partnerships and community-driven approaches in agricultural development. It serves as a model for replicating similar programmes across other states, emphasizing the need for continuous support and investment in agricultural value chains to achieve long-term food security and economic growth.
