FG launches support drive in Kaduna to assist farmers
The Nigerian government has initiated a food security and agricultural mechanization program aimed at supporting farmers nationwide. Launched by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the scheme, known as the Kashim Shettima Foundation’s Agricultural Empowerment Program, serves as both an empowerment initiative and a means to provide essential agricultural resources to farmers.
During the launch event held in Kaduna State, Shettima emphasized the program’s significance in recognizing the resilience of Nigerian farmers. He pledged the commitment of the Tinubu administration to unlock the nation’s agricultural potential and offer vital assistance to farmers. Acknowledging agriculture’s pivotal role in the country’s economy, Shettima highlighted its substantial contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and its status as the primary employer for a significant portion of the population.
Despite challenges such as input shortages and limited access to finance, Shettima underscored the state’s agricultural potential and the necessity for interventions to enhance productivity and empower farmers. He announced plans to cultivate 500 hectares of land through the program and provide financial support to beneficiaries and farmer cooperatives for establishing commercial farms.
Governor Uba Sani expressed the state government’s support for the initiative, while Commissioner for Agriculture, Mallam Murtala Dabo, highlighted its potential to address various challenges facing the agricultural sector. Baba Kachallah, Chairman of the Kashim Shettima Foundation, outlined the program’s initial phase, which includes the provision of tractors and training for aspiring agropreneurs, emphasizing the comprehensive support provided ahead of the rainy season.
