The federal government held a sensitization event at Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu to address misconceptions about the safety of biotechnological products in the southeast. The aim was to increase awareness of biotech crop benefits among farmers, scientists, and policymakers. Prof. Mustapha Abdullahi, CEO of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency, emphasized biotechnology as a key solution for agricultural challenges, aiming to enhance understanding of biosafety regulations and advancements. Prof. Christian Anieke, Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, highlighted the growing acceptance of biotech in Nigeria, particularly Bt Cotton and PBR Cowpea, and stressed the need for targeted advocacy in the Southeast. Dr. Rose M. Gidado, Director of Agricultural Biotechnology at NBRDA, discussed overcoming biases through effective science communication regarding PBR Cowpea, a genetically modified crop facing public skepticism.
