The Federal Government announced that food prices in Nigeria are expected to drop soon, driven by new farming techniques aimed at ensuring food security. At the 48th Annual Conference of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, acknowledged the current food crisis but emphasized efforts to boost food production and transition to year-round farming.
He highlighted the success of recent initiatives, such as the significant drop in Irish potato prices due to increased production in Plateau State, and urged farmers to engage in dry-season farming. The government is also focused on reducing food losses and supporting farmers through value-added initiatives.
Abdullahi emphasized the Nigerian farmer’s soil healthcare scheme, aiming to improve soil health and boost agricultural productivity across all 774 Local Government Areas. Prof. Jibrin Jibrin, President of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria, stressed the need to address soil degradation to improve crop yields, using science-based knowledge to maintain soil health.
