In response to escalating prices of beef, goat meat, and chicken, there’s been a significant surge in demand for pork meat as an affordable alternative in recent months. Market analysis reveals a remarkable uptick in demand across major cities in Nigeria, propelling the industry’s growth and leading to a spike in prices from N1,600 to N3,000 per kilogram. This surge has not only boosted the income of pig farmers but also attracted new entrants into the business, aligning with the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s projection of a 3.3% increase in pork consumption in Africa by 2050.
However, despite its potential, Nigerian pig farmers face numerous challenges, such as a lack of information, disease control measures, and high feed costs. This scarcity has led to difficulties in sourcing pigs for dealers like Emeka Iwuchukwu Aniebue, who now resorts to buying from intermediaries. Pig farmer Chidozie Onyema highlights the high demand for pork due to its affordability compared to other meats, signaling an opportunity for newcomers to start small. Yet, there’s a need for improved farming practices and education to meet the growing demand and ensure sustainable production.

The surge in demand for pork meat in Nigeria, driven by its affordability amid rising prices of other meats, signifies a significant shift in consumer preferences. This trend not only boosts the income of pig farmers but also attracts new entrants into the industry. However, challenges such as information gaps, disease control, and high feed costs hinder the sector’s growth potential. As highlighted by pig farmer Chidozie Onyema, the high demand for pork presents an opportunity for newcomers to enter the market, but it also underscores the need for improved farming practices and education to ensure sustainability. Addressing these challenges can enhance the entire value chain, from production to distribution, and contribute to fostering growth in the agri-food sector.
