The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has received an upgraded greenhouse facility aimed at enhancing seed storage and production. The facility, part of the PBR Cowpea Seed Project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), integrates state-of-the-art technology to meet modern storage demands.
Dr. Emmanuel Okogbenin, representing the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), emphasized that the facility symbolizes a commitment to agricultural innovation and progress. Equipped with a 100KVA solar system and cooling units, alongside a 30KVA solar-powered cold storage facility, the greenhouse ensures optimal conditions for seed preservation. Dr. Okogbenin stressed the importance of preserving seed quality and productivity, highlighting the solar-powered irrigation covering two hectares of land.
Prof. Ado Yusuf, the executive director of IAR, praised the longstanding partnership with AATF and expressed gratitude for the critical facilities provided.
