“Mr. Simon Ogbaji, an agricultural expert in Cross River, emphasized the potential of the Obudu Cattle Ranch to sustain beef and dairy production if revived. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ogbaji highlighted that the ranch, located on the Obudu plateau near the Cameroon border, has historically been more than a tourist destination. He recalled that in the 1970s, the ranch was a major producer of beef and milk, with products transported to Calabar. Despite its current state of neglect, the necessary facilities, including dairy houses and extensive grazing land, remain intact.
Ogbaji urged Governor Bassey Otu to focus on the ranch’s revival, citing its substantial livestock production potential. He mentioned that past efforts to manage the ranch through private companies, such as Farm Fresh during Mr. Donald Duke’s administration and another company during Mr. Liyel Imoke’s tenure, failed to yield results. Ogbaji suggested that political factors might be hindering progress but maintained that revitalizing the ranch could significantly boost local beef and dairy production.
