Experts suggest that Nigeria can significantly reduce its N3.5 trillion post-harvest losses by implementing effective cold chain systems. Currently, the country loses about 526 million tons of food annually, with 30% of food production wasted due to inadequate cold storage. At the Propak West Africa 2024 seminar, it was highlighted that proper cold chain practices, including quality cooling facilities and vans, could help curb this waste.
Augustine Okoruwa of Helen Keller International noted that cold chains, which regulate temperature throughout the supply chain, are essential for maintaining food quality and safety. Telematics technology enables monitoring of food transport, ensuring the desired conditions are met from farm to consumer.
Nigeria, despite being one of Africa’s largest food producers, faces high food wastage rates, exacerbated by inadequate storage and waste management practices. Experts emphasize the need for sustainable solutions like cold chains and environmentally-friendly packaging to mitigate the country’s food waste crisis.

Our Review
Nigeria’s agri-food sector suffers significant losses due to inadequate cold chain infrastructure, resulting in N3.5 trillion in post-harvest losses annually. As an expert in Africa’s agri-food business, it’s clear that implementing effective cold chain systems could drastically improve food preservation, reduce waste, and enhance overall food security. Cold chains maintain the quality and nutritional value of produce by controlling temperatures throughout the supply chain, from farm to market. This not only reduces spoilage but also opens up opportunities for farmers to reach wider markets, increasing their income and supporting economic growth.
The integration of telematics technology for monitoring food transport further ensures that optimal conditions are maintained, enhancing the reliability of the supply chain. Adopting these technologies can improve decision-making across the value chain, from production to distribution, ultimately reducing food insecurity and environmental impact. Additionally, the use of eco-friendly packaging can minimize greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.
By prioritizing cold chain systems and sustainable packaging, Nigeria can foster growth in its agri-food sector, making it more resilient and efficient.
