On World Food Day 2024, Olam Agri reaffirmed its dedication to Nigeria’s food security through impactful collaborations and initiatives. Under the Eko World Food Day initiative in partnership with the Lagos State government, Olam Agri contributed to numerous efforts to address food insecurity, foster community well-being, and drive awareness around sustainable food systems.
Olam Agri’s support for the event included providing 800 food boxes to vulnerable residents and installing essential water infrastructure in farming communities. These actions are designed to enhance local food systems and align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger. Additionally, community engagement activities such as a Road Walk and Food Systems Champions’ Summit brought together stakeholders across sectors to discuss food security challenges and solutions for Nigeria.
Aiming to empower the next generation, Olam Agri also sponsored an Agricultural Scholars Quiz, which inspired secondary school students to consider careers in agriculture, thereby creating future leaders in Nigeria’s agri-food sector.
Anil Nair, Managing Director of Olam Agri Nigeria, highlighted the company’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development, emphasizing the necessity of partnerships and local investments to create a resilient food system. Olam Agri’s actions demonstrate the power of collaboration and community-focused investments in building food security across Nigeria, particularly for vulnerable communities and regions facing environmental challenges.

Expert Review for Agri-Food Stakeholders:
Olam Agri’s multifaceted approach during the 2024 World Food Day celebrations underscores the company’s role in advancing Nigeria’s food security and aligns strongly with the Sustainable Development Goals. For agri-food stakeholders, Olam Agri’s initiatives serve as a strategic model for supporting food security through both immediate interventions and systemic infrastructure improvements.
Short-Term Relief and Food Security: By distributing food aid to communities in Lagos and flood-affected areas in Maiduguri, Olam Agri addresses immediate food shortages, supporting food access for vulnerable populations. This approach serves as a reminder of the urgent need for continuous food aid in high-need regions, especially as the impacts of climate change and poverty create ongoing vulnerabilities.
Water Access for Sustainable Agriculture: The commissioning of boreholes in Nasarawa’s farming communities highlights the essential link between water infrastructure and agricultural productivity. Stakeholders in agriculture can take this as an example of the critical need to invest in rural water systems to support farming operations and improve community health.
Youth Engagement and Future Leaders in Agriculture: Olam Agri’s educational initiatives, such as the Agricultural Scholars Quiz, are noteworthy for their potential to inspire a new generation to enter the agricultural field. This effort is especially valuable as Nigeria seeks to address generational challenges in agriculture and secure future talent pipelines for the sector.
Strategic Partnerships for Systemic Impact: Olam Agri’s collaboration with government bodies and NGOs is an effective strategy that demonstrates the value of cross-sector partnerships in achieving broader food system goals. Agri-food stakeholders should view this as an exemplary approach for pooling resources and expertise, fostering policy support, and implementing sustainable food systems in Nigeria.
Alignment with Global Standards and ESG Practices: Olam Agri’s adherence to sustainable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards reflects a growing trend in agribusiness towards responsible and sustainable practices. This ESG commitment is becoming increasingly crucial as consumers and partners demand transparency and accountability in food production.
As Nigeria grapples with food insecurity, Olam Agri’s initiatives underscore the need for an integrated approach that combines short-term relief with long-term structural investments. For stakeholders, this model can inspire similar programs that work towards building resilient, sustainable, and inclusive food systems capable of withstanding future challenges.
