The Federal Government underscores the pivotal role of smallholder farmers in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, highlighting their significant contribution to national prosperity. At a recent training and empowerment event under the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS) in Abuja, Mr. Temitope Fadeshemi, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, emphasized the importance of empowering these farmers. The initiative aims not only to boost agricultural productivity but also to enhance resilience and promote sustainable practices.
Represented by Mr. Michael Brooks, the Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Services, Fadeshemi stressed that investing in smallholder farmers is crucial for the nation’s agricultural future. Dr. Deola Lordbanjou from the Ministry of Agriculture highlighted that the distributed inputs, including sprayers, pesticides, seeds, and feeds, will significantly enhance farmers’ productivity. Beneficiary Elizabeth Oyerinde expressed gratitude for the support, pledging to utilize the inputs effectively. The program also encourages backyard farming as a means to alleviate hunger. This initiative aligns with efforts to transform Nigeria’s agricultural landscape and ensure food security.”
