Nigeria has unanimously adopted a policy for the multilateral access and benefit-sharing system under the International Plant Treaty, joining over 150 countries to access diverse crop genetic resources. This occurred at a one-day workshop in Ibadan organized by NACGRAB and Bioversity International. Dr. Sunday Aladele of NACGRAB emphasized the treaty’s importance for global food security and seed access. Having ratified the treaty in December 2022, Nigeria will submit the policy to the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology. The workshop included various government agencies and stakeholders, who stressed the need for public awareness to protect and utilize plant genetic resources effectively.
